Your first competition can be nerve-wracking.

Competing in front of a crowd can be nerve-wracking, especially when you’re doing something that is brand new to you. Brian Roberts was interested in competing in a jiu jitsu competition but wasn’t quite ready to make it happen. “I want to lose some more weight first” was Brian’s response when asked whether or not he would be testing his abilities in the upcoming Copa America contest, here in the greater Atlanta area.

Coach Phillipe remembers his talk with Brian about competing:

“He said that he wanted to lose weight first. I responded by explaining that there’s no better motivation for weight loss than signing up for a tournament and gave the example of Coach Mike Rock losing 35 pounds and keeping it off after registering for the Atlanta Open. Just do it I told him. The worst that can happen is you lose.”

That was enough motivation for Brian and he got to work! Hitting the gym several times a week, and paying more attention to his diet, Brian had already dropped 22 pounds since starting with SBG, and he lost another 6 getting ready for his first ever tournament. When game day came around, he was ready to go.

“I wasn’t nervous, just really anxious to see how I’d do against the competition” recalls Brian. I felt like I had a solid foundation that was taught in the fundamentals class and that the coaches had helped break me of bad habits and helped me build on that foundation. Also having the team there to cheer me on and motivate me was huge!”

To say that Brian did well is an understatement. In front of his friends, fiance, coaches and training partners, he won the gold medal in both divisions he competed in! Brian tapped into everything he had learned and looked fantastic in the process. Win or lose, Brian achieved a major milestone just by getting out there and showing what he could do. In the process, he has motivated others to follow in his footsteps and challenge themselves.

Way to go Brian!
