What makes a Coach great? We think a great Coach has a combination of expertise and enthusiasm, that inspires others to do more and be more. At SBG Buford, we take coaching seriously. It’s easy to do when you’re as passionate about it as we are. Our mission is to guide you into being a stronger, healthier and more confident version of yourself. We accomplish that by being the best we can be. At a minimum, all Straight Blast Gym Buford coaches must have practiced and competed in martial arts for three years, completed the SBG Level 1 Coaches Course and interned under SBG Atlanta’s head coach prior to teaching their first class. This intense training process ensures that our Coaches deliver the best possible training experience for you and the Buford Martial Arts community.
Coach Phillipe is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, accomplished Mixed Martial Artist and one of the most passionate coaches around. Nothing gets Coach more fired up than hearing a SBG members success story, and over the years he’s been fortunate enough to hear plenty. In addition to helping people gain confidence, stand up for themselves, lose weight and gain strength, Coach Phillipe has helped build two state Champion Mixed Martial Artist , numerous Jiu Jitsu gold medalist and a tribe of incredible coaches. What makes Phillipe’s coaching unique is his ability to make hard training so much fun. By chunking down Coach is able to make complex movements easy to absorb and use in a practical way. When Phillipe is not on the mats, you’ll find him hanging with his wife Aundrea and kids, Dameon and Zaida. Together they enjoy travelling, camping and music.

If you ever find yourself in a fight – to finish that last rep, or even competing – you need Coach Pat in your corner! With nearly 100 fights as a corner man and coach, Pat has been instrumental in bringing home over 4 championship belts to SBG-Buford! He started training and competing in the 90’s with Kickboxing, Muay Thai & MMA. As a coach, Pat has helped build the MMA team from the ground-up. He is always encouraged by tracking every students’ progress & see the skills being passed on to younger athletes – some who have gone on to fight!

- He has a great collection of art that he buys/sells
- At one time was a smoker of 10 years – got healthy at the age of 26, quit and never looked back!
“Common sense is not so common”
Otherwise known as “The Corporal”, Coach Sean is the embodiment of motivation. Coach Sean has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2007 and is the head kids coach. In addition to working with the kids in our Growing Gorilla classes, Coleman teaches Foundations and Advanced BJJ classes. In addition to Jiu Jitsu, Sean enjoys CrossFit, kickboxing and swimming. Two of his three daughters also train, often taking their father’s Growing Gorillas classes. Sean’s passion for absorbing knowledge and sharing it with his students make him one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors in Georgia.

As a CrossFit, USA Weightlifting & CrossFit Olympic Certified trainer, Coach Sean has developed a keen eye for technique in varying body types and an understanding of how people move differently. He started his coaching career in 2007 working heavily with new lifters, helping them with proper form and lifting. It’s his passion for technique that separates him from your average coach and, in fact, it’s what separates good coaches from GREAT ones. Coach Sean has a very notable career in lifting as well- with National University Championships, National Junior Championships, National School Aged Championships and even Georgia State Championships Gold Medalist!

- Loves working in his wood shop, building different things for training & recreation
- Really enjoys cooking for his family and friends
- Will do most anything…for brownies!

Coach Crowder is a very accomplished competitor and coach. He strives to help each person learn how capable they truly are. Since being born with a heart condition that kept him from doing any sports until his 20’s, he has defied expectations – competing in CrossFit Team competitions and in Weightlifting meets locally and nationally. Through his long tenure in coaching he has witnessed it done the wrong way and seen many people walk out of a gym because of a bad experience – so, he sees it as his personal obligation to help people move and feel better! When Coach Crowder is not in the gym, you can find him spending time with his wife, Sarah and daughter, Freya.
Interesting facts about Mike:
- Cannot stand the taste of yogurt!
- His 8 year old daughter hold a higher rank in Jiu Jitsu than him =)
- He graduated high school weighing 130lbs.

As one of the top professional MMA fighters in Georgia, Coach Jared knows what it takes to reach high levels! He has been training jiu jitsu and kickboxing for over 5 years and is a Brazilian jiu jitsu purple belt. About 1 year into his training, he decided that he wanted to be a mixed martial artist. After 3 years of training and winning 2 amateur MMA titles, Jared became a professional MMA fighter, winning “Breakthrough Fighter Of The Year” in 2016. As of January of 2017, he has a 7-1 professional MMA record. As a coach, Jared loves the process of helping people progress and do better individually. You can find him teaching the BJJ Foundations and Kickboxing classes – and helping build future leaders of tomorrow with solid technique, discipline and setting the example of how hard work pays off!

James has played sports his entire life, but ended up falling in love with wrestling and lifting weights in high school. He started wrestling at the end of his freshman year, which is when he was first introduced to strength training. James became obsessed with learning about the human body and how to improve athletic performance which led him to getting his CrossFit level 1 certification. James is an avid weight lifter who specializes in Olympic-style lifts, maximizing the body’s maximum power output, and helping people to get in great shape.

- Can fall into a deep sleep in almost any environment
- He loves learning and reading about outerspace

Coach Kristen exudes energy and it affects everyone she comes in contact with! The goal she always strives for, as an athlete & coach, is to be better than yesterday – everyday! With 5 years of CrossFit experience and competing every step of the way, she leads by example. Coach Kristen is both CrossFit Level One and USA Weightlifting Certified. Being physically fit is important and it’s her goal to achieve this for every person she trains through CrossFit & Weightlifting!

- Loves to incorporate Yoga into training 1-2x per week
- Currently Practicing Inpatient Cardiology for The Heart Center in Braselton, GA

Coach Jim brings unbridled energy and positivity into each class he teaches. He makes each class fun and exciting, as he believes physical exercise should be. Having been in the health and wellness industry for over a decade, he’s had time to hone his skills as one of the top Kickboxing coaches around. Coach Jim’s enthusiasm is contagious, giving everyone in his classes the energy to complete the training hour and then some. Jim is the operations manager and co-owner of SBG Buford, and when he is not at the gym he is Crossfitting, kayaking, or playing music.

Andrew began wrestling at age 11 after realizing he was too short to continue playing basketball. During high school he racked up a very impressive 110 wins and was selected as an All-American for all four years he competed. Andrew went on to wrestle at McKendree University while obtaining a BS in Health and Wellness. Andrew is an active MMA competitor and Jiu Jitsu blue belt.

Jonah has been weightlifting for almost 8 years. He entered high school weighing over 230lbs and learned more and more about weight loss and proper nutrition while playing football, which then led him into weightlifting. Jonah instantly fell in love with weightlifting medaling in 4 national weightlifting championships, and receiving countless gold medals in state competitions. Jonah is USAW sports performance certified, and is one of the state’s top Olympic weightlifting competitors.
